“My MIL showed me pictures of my husband’s ex-girlfriend the first time we met and compared me to the ex in every way imaginable throughout the night.”

Note: This post briefly mentions suicide.

"I was hysterical and took a pregnancy test. I ended up finding out I was pregnant, and I cannot tell you how mad I was at her. We kept the baby and filed a restraining order against her. Looking back, I was really stupid and should have been more wary. I love my kid, but I wish I had gotten to wait until I was older to have him. Most moms won’t be this wild, but just remember, if they don’t respect your little boundaries, they won't respect any."

"We live over 2,000 miles away, and MIL calls my wife every day. She expects my wife to fix all of her problems (teach her to budget, deal with the other siblings’ problems, etc.). She treats my wife like her therapist. MIL and siblings are dysfunctional, and they end up manufacturing chaos because they never went to therapy to work through their trauma; they just keep passing it down. Then, they all expect my wife (and I) to fix the problems they create."

"If someone cannot set/respect healthy boundaries, even a large physical distance won’t stop them from overstepping in your relationship.

Luckily, my wife and I are on the same page, and she is very good about setting and holding boundaries with her mom. She has no problem putting the phone on DND or hanging up on her mother if she says she has to go and the mother doesn’t end the convo."

"She packed up my maternity clothes when I was at my OB (said it was an accident) and bought me clothes for someone only five months pregnant. They were super tight on me and made me so self-conscious. She would also say I was ‘manspreading’ when I couldn’t physically close my legs because I was so pregnant. Also, multiple times I peed myself because she pushed on my stomach when I needed to pee. I hate her so much."

"And last year, when my daughter stayed with her for a couple weeks during the summer, I specifically asked that they refrain from seeing two specific movies in the theater because I wanted to see them myself with my daughter. MIL proceeded to take her to one of them and said (afterward), 'I knew there was a movie to not take her to, but didn't remember which one.' Mind you, SHE COULD'VE ASKED. ONE FREAKING TEXT is all she had to send. But nooooo... So yeah, overall, a lovely lady, just aggravating at times, LOL. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️😮‍💨😂"

"Her acting out has progressed to the point that her sisters-in-law actively avoid HOLIDAYS because they can't stand to be around her for a few minutes, let alone hours. She didn't respect boundaries in the beginning, and she definitely doesn't now."

"We had a falling out when I tried to address some of her inappropriate comments. That was years ago, and my husband’s family is STILL trying to break us up and 'advising him' that I’m not the woman for him. Welp. We own a house and are expecting our first child together. Sadly and understandably, it can be hard for my husband to navigate having such a toxic family (they’ve done and said many other terrible things to him), which is heartbreaking. As for me, I no longer have to deal with a racist psychopath being disrespectful and putting me in a bad mental space. My husband and I are SO much better off without his immediate family shoving our racial differences in our faces any chance they get. We genuinely love and respect each other, and no one can break that. Peace and love over any kind of 'family support.' Your blood family aren’t always your people and don’t always wish you well if they can’t benefit from it. #byeee"

"'Is she going to do XYZ? Does your wife like this?' Granted, this is actually one of the least offensive things she does, but it is something to look out for that can set the tone of a relationship."

"I kept gaining weight and trying so hard to lose it. I was only eating 1,300 calories a day, but my weight was well over 200 pounds. One day while going through my cupboards, I found an empty bag of sugar. I was confused because we only use stevia in my house because of a family history of diabetes. We sat down with her and had a conversation. She came clean. She had switched our stevia with real sugar (I use lots a day for smoothies), put lard and sugar in my yogurt, put sugar in my workout drinks, my tea, my jam, everything. She had allowed me to consume over 3,500 calories a day unknowingly. I weighed around 215 by the time I found out and gained over 100 pounds in under a year. The reason why she did this? She didn’t want me to look better than her when she got married for the third time. I lost most of the weight from this ordeal but have lots of stretch marks and am still emotionally recovering from it. After this, we cut off all contact with her."
