Longtime Republican strategist Karl Rove on Wednesday warned Republicans that President Donald Trump’s plan to make the midterms all about himself would likely backfire.

With control of both the House and Senate on the line in November, Trump is reportedly planning an ad blitz featuring himself as well as appearances at daily rallies in battleground states.

“What could go wrong with a rally a day and hundreds of millions of dollars in ads in battleground states featuring Mr. Trump?” Rove asked in a new Wall Street Journal op-ed. “A lot.”

Rove, the architect of President George W. Bush’s two victories, said Trump’s plunging approval ratings mean inserting himself into the campaigns could only backfire, as it will tie each candidate “to an intensely unpopular status quo.”

He also made a prediction for how those rallies will unfold:

“He’ll have no script, saying whatever comes to mind. His crazy comments will dominate the news, locally and nationally. Republican candidates will constantly have to fend off questions about whether they agree with his latest insult or half-baked idea. The narrative won’t be on anything positive about them or the GOP.”

So why is Trump doing it?

“The answer: narcissism,” wrote Rove, noting that Trump’s 2024 victory margin was the fourth-smallest in 60 years, and his support has only fallen since.

Rove said Trump’s best option would be to “act more presidential and empty his super PACs’ bank accounts” by producing ads featuring Republican candidates rather than himself.

“Clock’s ticking,” he wrote.
