A convicted killer has admitted murdering a man on New Year's Eve, telling police "it's happened again."

Daniel Levy, 48, stabbed 41-year-old Abdul Kaleem Shaik in the neck at his home in Vauxhall before going to Bishopsgate Police Station on 1 January, the Old Bailey heard.

Officers found Shaik's body on a makeshift bed in the flat, and Levy was arrested and charged with murder.

Levy, who has schizophrenia, had previously been convicted of the manslaughter - by reason of diminished responsibility - of his grandmother, after stabbing her and setting her on fire in 2000.

He was sentenced at the Old Bailey to an indefinite hospital order for his grandmother's death.

After being released from a secure mental health unit, he was recalled to hospital in 2013 after experiencing thoughts of killing his parents.

When he was released again, he was required to stay in contact with his mental health team and receive medication by supervised injection.

He initially denied murder, citing his mental health, but changed his plea as his trial was due to begin at the Old Bailey.

Levy told judge Lynn Tayton KC he wanted to plead guilty to Shaik's murder: "I don't want to go to trial. I don't want my personal information outside in public. I would rather just go quietly as possible, do my time."

The judge ruled Levy was fit to enter his plea.

In a police interview, Levy said he had known the victim for years and had allowed him to stay at his flat.

He claimed Shaik had been struggling with his mental health and that he believed he needed to help him by killing him, securing his passage to heaven.

Prosecution barrister Peter Ratliff told an earlier hearing: "He described how he had been considering and trying to do this for some time.

"He said he could hear him dying but did not want to watch it and went to the mosque to pray, had a massage and showered before going to the police station."

Levy was remanded into custody to be sentenced on 9 September.
