(NewsNation) — A routine highway rest stop check turned into a rescue for an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper.

Trooper John Kronander of the Medina Post was on patrol Aug. 23 in Guilford Township when he found a puppy abandoned in a crate at a rest stop off I-76 eastbound.

"He noticed a little cage off on the right-hand side that was kind of away from all the traffic," Sgt. Jeremy Kindler told NewsNation local affiliate Fox 8 Cleveland. "There was no trucks around. When he noticed that, he saw like a cardboard box on top, and he saw some movement in it."

When Kronander went over and lifted the cardboard box, he found the puppy locked in a crate with no food or water.

"We'll get you out of here, okay?" said the trooper to the puppy on body camera footage released from the rescue. "Someone left you? It's okay. How long have you been here?"

To his surprise, the puppy wasn't afraid and immediately began to play with him.

"Oh, you pawing me? Oh, oh my gosh. Are you pawing me?" Kronander said to the puppy. "Want to go with me?"

Kronander took the puppy back to the patrol post, where they gave him food and water and contacted the local animal shelter.

The puppy was taken in by the Medina County SPCA, which named him Miles. The shelter believes he is about 3 to 4 months old. The shelter told Fox 8 that Miles will be neutered this week and should be available for adoption next week.

In the meantime, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reviewing surveillance footage from the area to identify who abandoned him.
