Trump Called Apple Directly About Lake Ontario, Interior Secretary Says

After President Donald Trump’s recent executive order called for the U.S. to change Lake Ontario to Lake America amid an escalating trade war with Canada, Google updated its maps to reflect the change. Now, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum says Apple is next on the list. “I know that the president reached out to Apple directly, so I’m sure that we may be seeing that change coming up soon to Lake America,” Burgum said while appearing Monday on “Mornings With Maria” on Fox Business. HuffPost has reached out to Apple and the White House for comment. Burgum explained how his department has made the change. “When the president signs an executive order, you know, reflecting a name change like the Gulf of America or Lake America, it does direct the Department of Interior … the Board of Geographic Names is part of the U.S. Geologic Survey, that great mapping institution and science institution, which is part of the Department of the Interior,” he said. Burgum added, “They plug that into the software and then that software cascades down so all the map providers would do that.” Google addressed the update on its platform to show Lake Ontario as Lake America for U.S. users in a blog post on Sunday. “The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed the name for ‘Lake Ontario’ to ‘Lake America’ in the United States. Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names.” The post continued, “These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now.” Trump signed the executive order last week after the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods when trade talks collapsed between the once-friendly nations. Trump on Saturday again took aim at Canada in a series of bizarre AI posts on Truth Social. In one post, Trump physically renamed Lake Ontario by kicking over its sign and replacing it with a “Welcome to Lake America” topped with an American flag. He then celebrated by doing his signature fist-pumping dance to the Village People anthem “YMCA.” In another AI post, an army of Canadian geese donning the president’s blond swept-over hair marched toward “Lake America” before firing off machine guns.
