Shares of UnitedHealth Group have slipped 14.9% from its 52-week high of $461.62. The stock has risen 2.7% over the past three months, lagging behind the State Street SPDR S&P Health Care Services ETF's (XHS) 16.6% gain over the same time frame. Longer term, UNH stock is up 19% on a YTD basis, underperforming XHS' 26.2% increase. Moreover, shares of the largest U.S. health insurer have soared nearly 30% over the past 52 weeks, compared to XHS' 37% return over the same time frame. Despite recent fluctuations, the stock has fallen below its 50-day moving average since mid-July. However, it has been trading above its 200-day moving average since last year. Shares of UnitedHealth Group rose 1.2% on Jul. 16 after the company reported better-than-expected Q2 2026 adjusted EPS of $6.38 and revenue reached $112 billion. The strong results reflected better medical cost management, with the medical cost ratio improving to 86.7% and below the analyst estimate, alongside a 29% jump in Optum operating income to $4 billion. Investor confidence strengthened further after UnitedHealth raised its 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to $19.50 - $20. In contrast, rival CVS Health Corporation (CVS) has slightly lagged behind UNH stock. CVS stock has gained 17.3% on a YTD basis and 29% over the past 52 weeks. Due to UNH's outperformance relative to its industry peers, analysts remain bullish about its prospects. The stock has a consensus rating of "Strong Buy" from 26 analysts in coverage, and the mean price target of $480.81 is a premium of 22.4% to current levels.
