A British holidaymaker died after a rampant wildfire trapped her inside the Spanish villa she was renting, a coroner said.

Lisa Fryett, 47, was badly burnt while flames surrounded her and partner Simon Batchelor for up to six hours on 9 July, an inquest opening in Chelmsford heard.

The couple, from Canvey Island in Essex, were rescued from the mountainside in Bédar and taken to hospital in Seville, but Fryett died almost three weeks later.

In a post online on 31 July, her family said Batchelor was in a "critical condition".

Area coroner Michelle Brown said Fryett's provisional cause of death was "extensive burns-related changes".

"This 47-year-old lady was on holiday in Spain when she became trapped by a wildfire at the villa she was staying at," Brown told Essex Coroner's Court.

"After five to six hours of being trapped, this lady - along with her partner - was rescued by emergency services and taken to hospital, where she sadly died from her injuries."

Fryett was pronounced dead at 11:45 local time (10:45 BST) on 28 July.

The coroner said an inquest into her death would be fixed at a later date.

The tourist was one of at least 14 people, including several fellow Britons, killed by the wildfire in Spain's Almeria province.

One of the country's deadliest blazes, it burned through about 7,000 hectares (17,300 acres) of land, authorities said.

More than £65,000 has been collected for Fryett's family via an online fundraiser.

Writing on the page, they said: "Lisa fought so incredibly hard, and we are so grateful that her loved ones were able to be by her side, surrounding her with love until the very end.

"The love, kindness and generosity we have received have brought us comfort during the most devastating time of our lives."

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office previously said it was in contact with Spanish authorities.
