Hayden Panettiere’s mom, Lesley Vogel, opened up about the loss of her daughter ― and what led to their estrangement.

Vogel told “Good Morning America” that a year ago, she answered Panettiere’s calls for help to get out of her abusive relationship with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, whom she has been linked to since 2018.

“She knew that Brian was toxic,” Vogel said in the interview, released Monday. “She knew she had to get him out of her life.”

Vogel said she was with the “Heroes” actor in California but noticed her daughter began pulling away from her after about six weeks. At that time, Vogel said, she left her daughter and returned to her home in Florida.

She told “GMA” the reason she left was because Panettiere was back with Hickerson.

“When I got the phone call from her saying, ‘I’m going to be with the person I love,’ I just lost it,” Vogel said. “I could not believe that she had gone that far back, that he had been successful in reeling her back in with all of the things he had done to her.”

Vogel said she then gave Panettiere an ultimatum, on the advice of her therapist. As long as her daughter was with Hickerson, Vogel said, she couldn’t be a part of her life.

“I needed to have that pocket of time,” she said. “Of course, I thought it was going to be a pocket of time. I did not by any stretch of the imagination think that this was going to happen to Hayden.”

Hickerson and his brother, Zach, were with Panettiere when she died at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina. The “Remember the Titans” star was 36.

In Vogel’s first interview after Panettiere’s death, she called out Hickerson by name.

“This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death and that was Brian Hickerson,” she told NBC News.

Panettiere detailed her turbulent relationship with Hickerson in her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.” In the book, she wrote that he once busted “up my face so badly I don’t leave the house for weeks.”

A lawyer for Brian Hickerson released a statement last week.

“Hayden’s death remains under investigation, and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed,” Sloan Ellis said in the statement shared Thursday with TMZ. “As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play.”
