Mychal Threets, the media personality and librarian who hosts the “Reading Rainbow” reboot, says he plans to check himself into a hospital. “I am not okay. Maybe I’ll never be okay. I’m seeking help,” Threets, 36, wrote Monday in a Threads post. “Going to the hospital tomorrow. In this moment I am safe. By God’s grace.” He continued, “No matter what happens to me I will always be thankful for the extraordinary people in my life who worry, who help me. Thank you for your care. I will always love you.” Threets, known as Mychal the Librarian, received an outpouring of support and love in the comments section of his post. “Please get the help that you need because this world is a better place because you’re in it,” one person wrote. Another said, “We will be waiting in the library for you to return from your battle.” “We are with you and covering you in prayer. Get all the help you need — including tonight if it’s possible. You are loved,” someone else added. Threets has opened up about his mental health in the past. Speaking with NBC Bay Area in April, the children’s host, who has nearly 1 million Instagram followers, shared about how, as he was flourishing online, he left his job at a library for mental health reasons. “I was just really struggling in life, struggling at work for the first time, just started feeling burnt out,” Threets said. “And I think my plan was, honestly, to leave the world at that time. I planned to take my own life in March 2024, and I’m still struggling today, but it’s led to a life of just traveling all over the United States, and now I’m the resident librarian for PBS, PBS Kids, and also the host of ‘Reading Rainbow.’” Earlier this year, Threets got candid with People about his experience navigating depression and anxiety while in the spotlight. “I’m still a very introverted person,” he told the outlet. “I think because of what’s happened in life, I’ve become more extroverted. I’ve been more comfortable talking about the library, talking about library stories, talking about mental health, just because I love it all. But had I known all this was going to happen, I probably would’ve never started posting.” Need help with substance use disorder or mental health issues?
