Vista Energy (VIST) shares popped on Aug. 17 after regulatory filings confirmed that billionaire investor Peter Thiel has built a sizable stake in the oil and gas company. Thiel's hedge fund has spent a total of about $76 million to accumulate 1.2 million company shares. VIST is now the second-largest holding of Thiel Macro LLC.

At the time of writing, Vista Energy stock is up more than 45% versus the start of this year.

Thiel's vote of confidence is largely constructive for VIST stock as it suggests Wall Street may be underestimating the company's structural low-cost development model.

This high-profile investment underscores institutional appetite for high-margin South American energy assets benefiting from market-friendly economic reforms.

Thiel's stake aligns with his personal ties to Argentina; he recently bought a $12 million mansion in Barrio Parque and temporarily relocated his family to Buenos Aires.

In short, his disclosure could trigger immediate reassessments of Vista Energy's valuation multiple across hedge funds, which could further boost buying interest in the days ahead.

Vista Energy shares are attractive as a long-term holding because they offer a rare mix of explosive growth and a low multiple.

In fiscal Q2, the company more than quadrupled its per-share earnings (EPS) on a year-over-year basis to $2.38; yet, it's trading at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of less than 7x currently.

Crucially, NYSE-listed Vista has scaled production sharply while maintaining cash operating costs well under regional averages.

Coupled with management's ongoing share buybacks, including over MXN 58 million repurchased mid-August alone, VIST offers pure-play exposure to world-class shale resources.

Note that Vista's relative strength index (RSI) sits in the early 60s currently, indicating intense buying pressure.

Wall Street firms also remain bullish on Vista Energy as Argentina's premier independent operator in the Vaca Muerta shale.

According to Barchart, the consensus rating on VIST shares sits at "Strong Buy," with the mean price target of $89 signaling potential for a more than 20% upside over the next 12 months.
