(NewsNation) — Two new states have reported an outbreak of cyclospora linked to lettuce, bringing the total number of affected states to 17.

Cyclosporiasis can last for weeks: Here's what to watch for

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tracked laboratory-confirmed 13,895 cases of cyclosporiasis since May 1, 2026, with 9,481 part of the outbreak. The total number of cases is likely to be higher because not everyone who is infected with cyclospora will see a doctor and because it requires specialized testing that may not be run for every person showing symptoms.

The outbreak has been linked to iceberg lettuce sold by Taylor Farms via Mexico, which was recalled on July 17. The best-by dates for the recalled products have passed, so it should no longer be available in stores or restaurants.

The FDA has initiated on-site inspections with the company, in cooperation with Mexican authorities.

Cases of cyclospora typically spike during the summer, as the parasite thrives in warm weather. However, the CDC has recorded a record number of cases this year, with some experts warning other produce could be affected as well.

Cyclospora is difficult to wash off produce, especially delicate items like berries and leafy greens or precut produce. It can cause explosive diarrhea and infections may persist as long as a month if not treated.

The Taylor Farms lettuce was distributed to restaurants and food service providers in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

The product may have been distributed to other locations, including California, the District of Columbia, Delaware, North Dakota, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont and Washington.

The recalled lettuce was also sold under the Marketside brand at Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

The outbreak remains under investigation by the FDA and CDC.
