The Sam Altman Grindr Saga Is Even Weirder Than You Think – Mostly Because It’s Not Real

Last week, Jake Schroeder turned to his 340,000 Instagram followers with a screenshot of a supposed Grindr interaction between himself and "Altman", who was "lonely and horny". Before we knew it, the screenshot racked up thousands of believers, and comments came flooding in: "It’s not a convo, it’s a renaissance painting 🔥 May your pillow be always fresh and comfy good sir." Another chimed in: "Unfortunately AI has eroded media literacy, and I am left no choice but to believe this is real." Jake returned to Instagram with 13 different posts, ranging from Glee-style ballads detailing the apparent interactions to a claim that he was about to join a legal call with OpenAI, along with screenshots of compensation emails to remove the posts. One read: "Jake, Thanks for chatting today. The best we can offer is $500 and a branded crew neck. "Please send your size and mailing address. "I will pay you more plus some swag from my last book to keep it up," one quipped, as many more encouraged him to push for more: "They really wanted the farce to bring them exposure. lol let’s ask for $10,000 friend!" As mindless brain-rot scrolling goes, was it entertaining? Absolutely. Factually accurate? Not so much. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed to BuzzFeed that the posts are indeed fake. And if you already follow Jake and his gloriously unhinged creative ballads, you’ll know this is very much in keeping with the kind of content he makes.
