On Holding (NYSE:ONON) shares fell as much as 20.29% on August 11, their worst single-day drop on record, after the Swiss running shoe maker's second-quarter results and trimmed guidance sent traders running for the exits. Trading volume that day hit roughly 604% above its three-month average. But strip away the panic, and the numbers underneath tell a more complicated story than a simple miss. On's second-quarter net sales reached CHF 850 million, up 21.6% at constant currency, and the composition of that growth is the real headline. Direct-to-consumer sales jumped 34.3% at constant currency to a record 45.7% of total sales, the channel where On controls pricing, storytelling, and full-price integrity. Gross margin climbed to 65.4%, a 390 basis point improvement, while adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 19.8%. Adjusted EPS swung from a loss of 0.09 CHF a year ago to a profit of 0.35 CHF, edging past the 0.34 CHF estimate. Growth was hardly confined to one region either. EMEA net sales rose 20.5% at constant currency even against a tough prior-year comparison, and APAC surged 54.7%, marking another quarter of 20% global share. Newer categories are scaling fast too: apparel grew 56.2% at constant currency, tennis apparel sales nearly tripled, and the Cloudtilt lifestyle franchise posted 190% year-over-year growth. Co-CEO David Allemann framed the quarter as proof that "a brand can achieve global scale without compromising its premium brand positioning." The sell-off traces back to two things: a revenue miss and a guidance cut. Reported revenue of CHF 850.3 million fell short of the CHF 879.6 million analysts expected, and management lowered its full-year constant-currency sales growth outlook to the "low-20% range," down from a prior forecast of at least 23%. The culprit was wholesale, which grew just 4.8% on a reported basis as On deliberately held back shipments of its everyday running franchises in a heavily promotional Americas marketplace. Management said it chose not to build inventory in the channel that could compromise full-price integrity heading into 2027. That is a defensible long-term call, but investors clearly wanted top-line momentum more than margin discipline in the moment, and the stock's record-breaking decline reflected that disappointment. Hedge fund ownership ticked up slightly, from 51 funds in the prior quarter to 52 in the most recent one, suggesting institutional conviction hasn't cracked despite the sell-off. Short interest sits at 7.89% of float, a level that points to a meaningful but not overwhelming bear camp. On now trades at a forward P/E of 24.45 as of August 12, a multiple that has come down sharply after the drop but still assumes On keeps delivering premium growth rather than merely average results. On's quarter captures a company trading sales velocity for margin quality, with gross margin guidance raised to at least 65% even as growth guidance came down. The tension is straightforward: bulls can point to a 65.4% gross margin, a record DTC mix, and broad-based regional strength as evidence the premium strategy is working exactly as designed.
