T-Mobile US is a wireless telecommunications carrier headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, and one of three dominant providers of mobile phone and data services in the U.S., alongside AT&T and Verizon. The company offers consumer and business customers postpaid and prepaid wireless plans, home internet service, and, more recently, broadband products โ including broadband for business customers backed by Starlink as a satellite connection. T-Mobile traces its U.S. roots to 1994, when the carrier now known as T-Mobile launched as VoiceStream Wireless. Deutsche Telekom, the German state-backed telecommunications giant, acquired it in 2001 and rebranded it T-Mobile USA. The company remained a mid-tier competitor for years before an aggressive strategy centered on eliminating annual service contracts and reducing consumer fees โ a campaign it branded the "Un-carrier" movement, launched in 2013 โ accelerated its subscriber growth and competitive standing. The company's current scale is largely a product of its April 2020 merger with Sprint, then the fourth-largest U.S. wireless carrier. The $26 billion deal, which cleared regulatory review after years of antitrust scrutiny, gave T-Mobile a substantially larger spectrum portfolio and subscriber base, vaulting it into the top tier of U.S. carriers. Sprint was subsequently absorbed and the brand retired. T-Mobile US trades on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker TMUS. Deutsche Telekom retains a controlling stake in the company. T-Mobile's network operates across all 50 states and U.S. territories, with its 5G network among the most widely cited in independent coverage assessments of speed and reach. The company has also expanded into enterprise services and is partnering with AT&T and Verizon on a joint satellite venture aimed at eliminating wireless dead zones. T-Mobile opened its first global capability centre in Hyderabad, India, with plans to grow the facility to nearly 1,000 employees, as part of a broader push to expand its engineering operations internationally.
