Steve Bannon Floats Wild Choice To Replace DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin

MAGA mastermind Steve Bannon said President Donald Trump needs a Department of Homeland Security secretary who won’t shy away from his hardcore anti-immigration agenda. Bannon, who helped blaze Trump’s brash, America-First trail to the White House in 2016, told Politico Playbook he thinks the president may have overcorrected when picking current DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to replace scandal-ridden Kristi Noem. “Mullin is the wrong guy at the wrong time for the wrong job — a time when we need focus on ‘mass deportations,’ we get an amnesty advocate,” Bannon told Playbook. In Bannon’s eyes, the man for the job is Trump loyalist Bill Pulte, fresh off his tenure as the acting director of national intelligence. “MAGA wants President Trump to detail ‘Pitbull’ Pulte to DHS,” Bannon said. Mullin took the helm at DHS in March after Noem was fired following a controversy-plagued tenure involving public backlash against the agency’s surge into America’s biggest cities, its excessive (and sometimes deadly) use of force and allegations of personal impropriety. However, the far-right’s dissatisfaction with Mullin comes amid reports of his genial relationships with not one, but two, Democratic governors. Last week, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro told Politico he had a “good relationship” with Mullin, and shortly after, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said there was an “absolute difference” between Mullin’s DHS and the “start of the administration.” Mullin also caught flak for being weak when he ordered ICE to suspend vehicle stops after officers shot and killed two unarmed men in less than a month, a decision which Trump later reversed. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security told Politico that Mullin was executing Trump’s vision as intended and that critics were simply trying to stoke discord amid America’s ever-splintering right-wing factions. “We are all focused on delivering on the president’s mission to deport illegal aliens and protect the homeland,” the spokesperson said. “Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to sow division and create an illusion of chaos.” By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
