MySpace’s Rumoured Return Has Millennials Remembering These Chaotic 2000s Classics

We’re still recovering from the MSN nudge trauma. If you’re met with a bemused “What is that?!” you’ve just found your generational divide. Congratulations. And now, with MySpace rumoured to be making a comeback, millennials everywhere are preparing their top eight friends and seeking out the obscure emo song they picked to make themselves seem mysterious. Myspace was sold to News Corporation, the media giant owned by the Murdoch family, in 2005 for a staggering $580 million. Now Chris and Tim Vanderhook, who bought the website in 2011, have shared a not-so-subtle hint in a documentary that they’re planning to relaunch Myspace. “We still own Myspace. We are stewards of the Myspace brand at this point, and we are going to relaunch Myspace,” Chris shared with People. But before we start rewriting our profiles and pretending we didn’t all have questionable taste in music, let’s revisit some millennial 'gone but never forgotten' blasts from the past... Think glitter graphics, shout-out boxes, and pages dedicated to rating people from your school or becoming a teen matchmaker declaring who should get together at the ripe age of 12. Cyber bullying on steroids #fyp #netflix #formspring #documentary It somehow convinced an entire generation that anonymous honesty was a brilliant idea, when in reality it was mostly chaos, heartbreak, and oversharing. If you've ever wondered why millennials are so resilient these days, the answer might just be buried somewhere deep in their Formspring memories. When life was SIMPLE #msnmessenger #windowsmediaplayer #earlydays #fyp The shame of double texting simply didn't exist – in fact, if someone didn't reply within approximately 0.3 seconds, they'd get nudged. Then nudged again. Then sent the infamous laughing emoticon. Cryptic song lyrics became profound works of art, "brb" was the easiest way to escape an awkward conversation (with no intention of actually coming back), and for many of us, MSN delivered our very first taste of rejection when we were too shy to ask someone out in class. Bring me back my BB Curve immediately pls!! #blackberry #bbm #bbmmessenger #2010s #ping We say bring it back, though you can keep the endless broadcast messages and those painful BBM chains. Bad news if you'd promised to meet someone on MSN or were halfway through updating your MySpace profile. It really didn't age well. Way before OnlyFans, there was a time when magazines like Zoo and Nuts filled supermarket shelves, and opening a newspaper often meant being greeted by topless models just a couple of pages in. Somehow, this was completely normalised. Looking back now, it feels like one of the strangest cultural quirks of the 2000s. Additional photo credit: Nicholas Kamm/AFP via Getty Images
