South Dakota's governor race is shaping up. Two Republican candidates faced off in a July 28 primary runoff after neither garnered enough votes to win the nomination last month. This November, the Republican winner will face Democratic nominee and former State Sen. Dan Ahlers, who won the June 2 primary uncontested. South Dakota's governors serve a four-year term and cannot serve more than two consecutive terms. Here are the runoff results, according to election data from the Associated Press and CNN. Incumbent Gov. Larry Rhoden won the runoff by 70.8% with 99% of votes counted. Toby Doeden finished with 29.2% of votes. The race was the first gubernatorial runoff in the state's history, and culminates a hot contest that featured three debates and raked in big donor dollars. Rhoden previously served as the state's lieutenant governor to former Gov. Kristi Noem, who later became Department of Homeland Security secretary. Doeden, a businessman, touted his record outside of politics and put at least $4 million of his own money into his campaign for governor, according to campaign finance reports cited by the Argus Leader, part of the USA TODAY Network. It marked Doeden's first run for elected office. The GOP candidate has an edge come the general election: The red state hasn't had a Democratic governor since the 1970s, when Harvey Wollman was in office.
