LIV Golf's team championship will reportedly not be taking place this season.

If you've been paying attention to the situation involving LIV Golf, this report of the season finale being canceled should come as no surprise. It also sums up just how dire things have become for the breakaway circuit, while simultaneously contradicting the messaging LIV CEO Scott O’Neil tried to sell to the golf world in June.

According to Flushing It Golf, the team championship in Michigan is expected to officially be canceled after "multiple contractors" told the account that their travel and accommodations have been canceled and that "money is also owed."

Flushing It's report comes just days after LIV golfer Martin Kaymer told Today's Golfer that the team championship scheduled for Aug. 27-30 was "highly unlikely" to take place.

LIV Golf was unreachable for comment regarding the report of the team championship being canceled. A source with knowledge of the situation shared with OutKick that LIV continues to have positive discussions with prospective investors for LIV Golf 2.0 while working to secure funding for the circuit's future and long-term sustainability.

PGA TOUR CEO SHARES JARRING COMMENTS ABOUT PLAYERS RETURNING AS LIV GOLF SAUDI FUNDING DISAPPEARS

The LIV team championship was supposed to offer a purse of $40 million, with $11.2 million going to the winning team. However, it is difficult to pay out that type of purse when you presumably have no money.

In April, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) officially announced that it would be cutting off its funding to LIV Golf. The PIF's statement explained that its funding would remain in place through the remainder of the 2026 season, but that does not appear to be the case with the reported cancellation of the season finale.

This new development of LIV potentially shutting its doors earlier than expected doesn't exactly support the claim O'Neil made during an appearance on CNBC on June 9 in which he hailed the Saudi PIF as an "incredible organization."

"I can say that they've been terrific partners so far," O'Neil began, referring to the Saudis funding LIV Golf. "You have to take an incredible organization like PIF at their word, and they've been very public about funding us through the season. We are full steam ahead, the players are locked in, the management team is locked in."

It was reported in early 2026 that LIV Golf's net spending per month averaged $100 million in 2024 and 2025. For the 2026 campaign, LIV's fifth, Saudi PIF Governor Yasir Al Rumayyan reportedly approved a $266.6 million capital injection into the circuit.

If the LIV team championship is indeed canceled, it would mark the second LIV event on the original calendar to be axed in 2026. The LIV New Orleans event scheduled for late June was originally postponed in April, and while a targeted date sometime in the fall has been rumored, it seems highly unlikely the circuit makes its way to Louisiana.

LIV's next scheduled event is set for Aug. 6-9 in New York before heading to Indianapolis from August 20-23.
