The Wall Street Journal editorial board on Monday said President Trump is wrong in his pressure campaign to get rid of the Senate filibuster for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act.

"Bad ideas are everywhere in Washington, but here's one that belongs in a hall of fame: President Trump is again pressing Republicans to nuke the Senate's 60-vote filibuster rule to pass the SAVE America Act," the Journal's editorial board wrote.

"Or in other words, hand progressives the tools to pack the Supreme Court and create new states, in exchange for a voting bill that isn't a clear political winner for the GOP," the board continued.

The editorial decried getting rid of the filibuster "in exchange for the SAVE America Act," saying it is "a terrible trade."

"Whether or not Mr. Trump truly believes that hordes of illegal voters are the only reason Republicans ever lose, it isn't true," the board said in the piece.

On Monday, Trump and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) butted heads over the idea of axing August recess for the Senate to debate the SAVE America Act. The majority leader advised against wasting time on legislation that has had multiple failures on the Senate floor and also pushed back against repeated demands from the president for the Senate to abolish the filibuster for the bill's passage.

Thune stated that Trump has already heard directly from other Republicans in the Senate that the votes aren't there to change the upper chamber's rules.

"If I thought there was a path to getting a result, I'm all for it. … We voted on it two, three, four, five times already, had it up on the floor for an extended period of time. Show me how this ends. What's the picture of victory at the end?" Thune said Monday.

When reached for comment, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told The Hill in an emailed statement that "the SAVE America Act has always been a top priority for President Trump and it remains one."

"This is commonsense legislation supported by the vast majority of Americans that will secure our elections for generations to come," she added.
