President Donald Trump reflected on his friendship with Lindsey Graham on Tuesday during the senator’s funeral service, remembering the time when he “did something that I shouldn’t have done” before a crowd at a 2015 rally in South Carolina.

“I shared his personal cellphone number with the millions of people that happened to be watching that particular day,” Trump said, adding that he still remembers the number, even reciting it in his remarks. Funeral attendees laughed.

“That was the beginning of a friendship in a way,” Trump said, also mentioning that Graham got the last laugh because he “did not stop calling” Trump for the next 10 years.

Trump’s sharing of Graham’s phone number was not playful at the time. It was done after Graham, who was also running for president in 2016, called Trump a “jackass” after Trump said Graham’s good friend Sen. John McCain isn’t a war hero because he was captured.

Trump also brought up some of his and Graham’s most contentious moments, like the time Graham said he was finished with Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.

“Now he had one bad moment, and that was, you know, in the Jan. 6 thing when he stood up: ‘All right, now I’ve had it, that’s it, I can’t do it anymore,’” Trump said on Fox News days after Graham died. “Then he called me about 40 minutes later and said, ‘Did I really say that? I can’t believe it.’ And he took it back. So I give him a 99 instead of 100.”

On Tuesday, Trump also praised the senator for defending Brett Kavanaugh, who at the time was up for confirmation as a Supreme Court justice. Women had accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, but Graham told the judge that he had “nothing to apologize for.”
