Ahead of the premiere of Camp Rock 3, we caught up with Nick Jonas about returning to Camp Rock as a producer, working with Paul Rudd on Power Ballad, and balancing his hectic schedule. Iโm a pop-culture writer covering everything from TV and movies, to music, Broadway, books, and games. Nick Jonas rarely slows down. Between being a dad, touring, filming, and hosting a podcast with his brothers, he has one heck of a schedule. We hop on a Zoom call just after Nick has wrapped soundcheck โ only a few hours before he takes the stage at Rutgers University as the headliner for New Jersey's Official 250th Celebration. Growing up right next to Nick's hometown, my friends and I were fans of the Jonas Brothers from the very beginning. One of my friends remembers meeting the band at one of their first mall appearances, and talking with Nick all these years later feels like a full-circle moment."It's great to meet you and chat with a fellow Jerseyan," Nick says as we exchange hellos. Ahead of his performance, Nick reflects on what keeps him grounded amid his packed schedule, how he makes the most of his rare days off, and what it was like stepping back into the world of Camp Rock.Note: This interview has been edited for length and clarity. BuzzFeed: You are one of the busiest people in the industry, so thank you for taking the time to chat. What helps you stay grounded when life starts feeling hectic?Nick: The thing that helps me stay grounded is time with the people I love. I'm fortunate enough to get to do this with my brothers, who I'm very close with. Our whole inner circle is very, very tight.I'm always on the go, so that means I spend some time away from my wife and my daughter. It's hard to be away from my family, and when those moments feel tough, I know that I've got others around me. We all support each other and lift each other up.I also feel very fortunate to still be doing this. We all recognize that and see how rare it is to have fans who have stuck by us through every phase of our lives and careers. I'm very grateful for that. When you get a day off, how do you like to recharge?Nick: If I'm at home and my family's there, we're kind of hermits. We like to stay in, do arts and crafts with our daughter, play in our yard โ just spend time together, and cherish these memories that we have with each other. We also love to host and invite friends over for a barbecue. This summer has been great with FIFA going on, and the US making such a tremendous run. It's been nice to be home the last couple of weeks, watching the games and teaching our daughter about soccer and football. It's been really fun.Your whole life, you've been very open about having type 1 diabetes, and you've been a global advocate. Especially while on tour, is there anything you've built into your daily routine to help balance it more easily?Nick: In my now 20-plus years living with type 1, I've learned a lot about the management of the disease, and also my mental and emotional state when it comes to the day-in, day-out journey. I've got a tremendous doctor out in LA that I have a really good relationship with, and we speak often about little changes I need to make, or things I need to do to see my glucose numbers improve.Thankfully, I can say that my A1C, which is basically a collection of your numbers over roughly a three-month period, was the best it's been since before my diagnosis. My Dexcom G7 has really been a game-changer for me, and for so many people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.Being able to get real-time updates, follow trends, and make real-time decisions to keep my numbers where I want them to be has been a huge help in my daily life with type 1. That's really great to hear. I also want to chat about your new movie, Power Ballad, which I really enjoyed. What was your favorite part about making that film and working with Paul Rudd?Nick: Thank you. I'm really proud of the film, and I'm so glad it's finally out. The reaction has been tremendous. Getting a chance to work with Paul was a dream come true for me. I've been a fan of his forever, and John Carney is a filmmaker I've wanted to work with for a long time. So when this opportunity came up, I was just thrilled. I think the most fun scene to shoot was probably the one towards the beginning of the movie, where Rick and Danny first connect and start making music together. That was actually me and Paul's first day shooting together, and the first scene that we shot. It was a perfect introduction to the world of the film.We were able to just keep it loose and have fun, and playing off him is pretty easy, as you can imagine. We had a great time, and he's a great scene partner, so it flowed naturally. On the topic of movies, you are revisiting the world of Camp Rock, this time as a producer. Was there something from your experience making the first Camp Rock that you wanted to pass along to the new generation? Nick: It was a pretty wild feeling to be back on the Camp Rock set. We've lived a lot of life between that first movie and now, and we've had quite a few monumental life experiences. It was special to see this next generation of campers, who are all so talented and are going to be superstars. We had a few opportunities to speak to them and just encourage them to savor every moment. It flies by, and it's a crazy thing to jump into.I think our intention was to come in and create an opportunity for a whole new generation to fall in love with the Camp Rock franchise and give a platform for new talent. That movie did so much for us and had a big impact on our lives and careers. It feels really special to be able to pass that on to a new generation. Looking back, what are you most proud of about Camp Rock?Nick: While on set, a lot of crew members mentioned to us that they grew up watching the movies, and now they're working on Camp Rock 3. Seeing it span generations really hit me.I think that's something I'm most proud of โ that we made something that spans almost 20 years and has been part of the fabric of people's lives throughout their childhood and youth. Now they're introducing it to their kids, which is so cool. It's rare you get to be a part of something like that. When you revisit the Camp Rock soundtrack today, is there a song that instantly brings you back to that time in your life?Nick: I think the "This Is Me"/"Gotta Find You" crossover is an iconic song. As a fan, I love that song, and we had the chance to perform that with Demi [Lovato] at the start of the Greetings From Your Hometown tour at MetLife. That was an epic kick-off to the tour.A song that's special to me and feels totally different as I play it in my 30s is "Introducing Me." I'll be playing that one tonight for the show. Tonight, you're headlining New Jersey's official celebration of the 250th anniversary of our country, which I think is really special. What does this moment mean to you?Nick: When I was asked, I was a quick yes. I was really excited to come back to my home state and celebrate a huge moment for this country. As a person from Jersey who now lives out of state, any chance I get to come home and see my fellow Jerseyans, it's a real highlight. This was so fun, and thanks again for taking the time to chat! One thing I wanted to mention as a fan โ how much I enjoyed your work on the show Kingdom, and your movie Goat. Both are so underrated, and you were excellent in them.Nick: Thanks so much; I appreciate you mentioning that. I'm very proud of both those projects, and I'm glad you had a chance to catch them. Nick's new film, Power Ballad, is out now. Camp Rock 3 premieres August 13 on Disney Channel, and will be available to stream August 14 on Disney+.
