(NewsNation) — A second American aid worker has been diagnosed with Ebola while working in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the World Health Organization. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhnom Ghebreyesus said the humanitarian worker was diagnosed in Bunia, the capital of Congo's Ituri province, with the Bundibugyo strain of the virus. The patient was sent to Germany for continued treatment. One other American, a doctor, tested positive for Ebola in the first week of the outbreak and was flown to Germany for care. Ebola more 'difficult to contract' than other viruses, doctor says | NewsNation Prime The outbreak has been called the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak ever recorded in Africa by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Case and death counts have climbed quickly since Congo declared the outbreak on May 15, after the virus had already been spreading for weeks undetected. The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola does not have an approved vaccine or treatment. Clinical trials for a potential treatment began last week. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
