“[Redacted] can’t have more than a decade left.” "Honestly, I would love it if physical movie rentals made a comeback. I'm so over the whole 'Where can I watch X? It used to be on this platform, but it's gone now. Oh, it's on Y platform, but only if you have a subscription. Or I could rent it on Z, but I don't have an account on Z, so I'll have to download the app and set one up...' I miss just going to one building and browsing every movie ever made and going home with exactly what I want to watch."—u/icspn "You know what’s really messed up about this? I wanted to get a landline in case of emergencies—half of the reason was to be able to call my cell phone when I’ve lost it under a blanket. When I called to order one, they wanted close to EIGHTY dollars a month! I couldn’t believe it, and when I pressed, they explained that nowadays, a landline is sort of a niche service, so it’s now expensive. I think it’s BS. I think they clocked the situation exactly, and some genius decided it would be best to mark up the service 1000%, because with fewer people paying for the service, inflation is the only way to make a profit. I declined."—u/cagethehornytoad "I worked at Kay Jewelers, and they would have us cold-call people. Anyone with a name that was under the age of 60 would be rude, hang up, or decline. Anyone over 60 would be rude, hang up, decline, or talk my ear off for 5-20 minutes, then never show up in the store. I HATE COLD CALLING. END IT. No one likes it!!!"—u/Indianaunderwood "My husband's 94-year-old grandparents still use it.... Not much of an endorsement."—u/FightWithTools969 "What people don't realize about physical newspapers is that once they're printed, they can't be changed. The news is out there, and the government can't suppress it. With digital media, it can easily be altered, censored, or deleted, and nobody would really know the difference. When all news is digital, it becomes purely propaganda and extremely dangerous."—u/kinneydank "World Book is the only encyclopedia company still publishing physical books."—u/jellyn7 "I’ve only been in there a few times, and each time was to buy a gift for my Boomer mom, haha"—u/BosephusPrime "I paid my son's preschool tuition with a check last week, and it occurred to me that when he is my age, it will be a shocking fact that his tuition was paid with an ancient instrument called a check."—u/curlyhairedsheep "My daily routine includes a trip to the mailbox and a stop at the recycle bin to toss all that junk. It would be nice if that died out."—u/BuffNiagra4runner "QVC declared bankruptcy a month or two ago. I sent the article in my family chat because my mom used to be a big QVC person. Then she finally learned Amazon."—u/geekgirlwww "They have gone so much more MLM [multi-level marketing]. They may survive in a smaller way if they are willing to dial it back a bit."—u/Cayke_Cooky "As someone who had a Mary Kay mom in the '80s, it's always been MLM. People are just better at identifying it now."—u/Azrael88 "I actually had an Avon lady ring my doorbell last week. I was shocked because it had been decades since that last happened."—u/Long-Principle-667 "If it's not dishwasher-safe, I don't fucking want it. That said, if it is dishwasher-safe, then I will happily use weird, ornate stuff as daily dinnerware."—u/sofiaviolet "My father-in-law found 'coin collecting' late in life. He gushed over books and magazines and looked for 'that' bill or coin. He built up a collection of dozens of binders of organized stuff. When he died, no one was interested in the coins or bills themselves, so we are selling them through a local dealer. It does seem sad that no one wanted to continue collecting, but we at least know that he enjoyed it as a hobby."—u/DantesDame "Watch repair is a dying industry. And of the folks that are left, a large percentage of them won't touch older watches due to the risk of making something worse or not being able to fix it. Repairing old watches takes a skillset that is very rare these days, and there isn't enough demand to get younger watch repair folks to learn those skills."—u/rm-minus-r "There is a Harley-Davidson store in my hometown, and to this day, I don't know how they've been open for 20+ years. The parking lot is almost always empty, and they don't even use the parking lot when we have our annual car/motorcycle shows."—u/ACuddlyVizzerdrix "I recently went to Vegas and did not see a single impersonator. 😞"—u/coffeeczar "This I can see, or at least a massive downsizing. All the people I know below 40 never use them, preferring to work out the details of their trips themselves."—u/Tinia_and_Nethuns "This is true of pretty much every social organization (bridge clubs, Boy Scouts, bowling leagues, etc.). Robert Putnam calls this phenomenon 'civic disengagement' in his book, Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community. I recommend it 10/10 to anyone wanting to understand why fewer and fewer people join groups these days."—u/theoriemeister "So many churches in my area have closed due to reduced congregations."—u/DHumphreys "Welcome to Forever Cubes: The rental company that loans you both your retirement space and casket.* *Only offered with the premium package."—u/LittleKitty235 Note: Some comments have been edited for clarity.
