(NewsNation) — Indie distributor Neon will release “Artificial,” a dramatized film about Sam Altman’s brief ouster from OpenAI, after Amazon MGM Studios walked away from the project last month.

Amazon dropped the film June 19. The company has not publicly explained the decision beyond a statement to Variety saying it believed the movie “will be better served if it were released by a different studio.” Neon finalized a deal for the film June 30, according to Variety.

According to Variety, “Artificial” portrays Altman as a pathological liar and Elon Musk as a villain. Podcast host Matthew Belloni, who said he read the script, told Esquire the film tackles sensitive issues within the tech industry and presents a bleak view of artificial intelligence’s future.

“This is not a flattering portrait of Sam Altman. This is ‘[The] Social Network’ kind of on steroids, because you add in not only these guys warping the culture, they could potentially end the world. And that’s the message of this movie,” Belloni said.

Amazon signed a $50 billion investment deal with OpenAI in January, and founder Jeff Bezos has a personal connection to Altman, who attended Bezos’ wedding last year.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, whose credits include “Challengers” and “Call Me by Your Name,” “Artificial” covers the chaotic weekend in November 2023 when OpenAI’s board fired Altman as CEO before reinstating him days later.

Andrew Garfield stars as Altman. The cast also includes Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and Ike Barinholtz as Musk.

No release date has been announced. The film was reportedly targeting a festival debut before Amazon’s exit. Neon has a multiyear streaming agreement with Hulu.
