Two 19-year-old men were killed after a dispute between two groups escalated into gunfire at a suburban Detroit shopping mall on the Fourth of July weekend, according to authorities. The shooting happened around 1:25 p.m. Friday, July 3, at Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, Michigan, police officials said in a news release. Police said the violence was not a random attack but stemmed from an altercation between people who already knew each other. Dearborn, Michigan, spokesperson Hassan Abbas identified the two people killed as Cameron Watkins and Keonte Seaborn, both of Detroit. Abbas identified the men to the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. One victim was pronounced dead at the mall, while the second died after being transported to a hospital, Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said. A third person injured in the shooting was in stable condition on July 4, city officials said. The injured person was one of two individuals police took into custody July 3 in connection with the investigation. USA TODAY has reached out to the Dearborn Police Department for additional information. Investigators said the shooting began after a fight between two groups inside the mall turned to gunfire. "It appears this was not a random act of violence. This was between two parties that knew each other here at the mall," Shahin told reporters July 3. Police said the people involved were in their late teens to early 20s and that handguns were used in the shooting. Authorities believe the firearms were brought into the mall. "The loss of life is tragic," Shahin said. "These kinds of acts of violence are completely unacceptable." The investigation remains ongoing.
