The luxurious ocean liner (a first of its kind) was described as "practically unsinkable," but hit an iceberg during its maiden voyage and sank within hours on April 15, 1912. More than 1,500 passengers and crew died, and the tragedy has been made into numerous feature films, including 1997's Best Picture winner Titanic.
