Few things can send the internet into a frenzy like sport can. Be it outrage, reactions, debate, or just memes: sport has a way of taking over online and offline spaces when something noteworthy occurs. Welcome to What's the Score – the weekly roundup of sporting topics, news, and reactions that have been dominating the weekend's sporting newscycle and social media discussions. So, whether you're wondering what people in the office are on about, or just need to fill an awkward conversation with an in-law, here's what happened in the weekend of sport, and what people are saying about it.

Naturally, the World Cup is hogging most of the spotlight at the moment, with the tournament's group stage concluding over the weekend, and the round of 32 getting underway on Sunday night.Cape Verde have been one of the biggest and best World Cup stories, as the island-nation of 525,000 inhabitants continue to win the support of fans across the world. They secured a historic place in the round of 32 by drawing their third game, leaving them runners-up in group H which sets them up to play World Cup holders Argentina in the round of 32 on Friday.

Elsewhere, as always, fan reactions to their nations going through to the knockout stages are making the rounds on social media.Canada became the first team through to the round of 16 after a last-minute goal took them past South Africa. This unfortunate fan was caught in slow motion during the moment she realised her phone was spiralling out of her hands as she attempted to join in the Mexican wave.

Norway fans (and players) have been showing off their 'Viking Row', and they were going at it with gusto over the weekend. Even in defeat to France, the fans – who people are saying are amongst the best at the World Cup – put on a show.

Argentina fans were out in Dallas to watch their national team progress to the next round, and these fans had a creative way of locating the owner of a lost wallet.

An Argentina fan lost his wallet…The guy who found it turned the owner's name into a chant to track him down… It worked! Football fans are the greatest. 👏🇦🇷 pic.twitter.com/YRlWWej5pm

The next round continues tonight with Japan vs Brazil (6pm UK time) and Germany vs Paraguay (9:30pm UK time). Find the full schedule here.

The iconic tennis championship gets underway today, and there are some major talking points going into this year's tournament.Perhaps the biggest story is the return of tennis royalty, Serena Williams, who last played a singles match at the US Open in 2022. The 44-year-old seven-time Wimbledon singles champion is ready for the challenge, but says the nerves never go away.

Not only will Serena be seen in the Women's singles championship, but she'll also compete in the doubles alongside sister Venus.

While we can't wait to see the world's top tennis stars compete on the court, there may be less face time with them off it this year, as many of the competitors are set to protest during the tournament after being unhappy with the share of prize money. Many players are expected to limit their contractual media commitments at the tournament to 15 minutes – this reflects the percentage of revenue that Wimbledon currently pays the players as prize money (slightly under 15%).

The England cricket world was rocked by the announcement from Captain and England legend Ben Stokes that he is retiring from international cricket after the current Test match with New Zealand at Trent Bridge comes to an end.

In an unusual scene, the fans in the stadium learnt of Stokes' retirement while he was on the field, which led to a outpouring of appreciation and a standing ovation.
