JD Vance's Nixon Joke Demonstrates The Unhinged Truth About The Trump Era
Images
JD Vance managed to raise eyeballs on Thursday with some comments he made about a president considered to be one of the most corrupt of all time. But, no, it wasn’t Donald Trump. It was Richard Nixon, who, unlike Vance’s boss, was never actually impeached but resigned before the House could vote on his charges. During a speech at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California, Vance admitted being “fascinated by Nixon as a character in history,” and suggested his presidency, which ended in disgrace with his 1974 resignation, might be “enjoying a bit of a renaissance,” ― and added, “deservedly so.” The vice president also suggested if the Watergate scandal that led to the end of Nixon’s presidency happened tomorrow, “It would be like a 12-hour news story.” He added, “The idea that it took down a presidency is crazy.” Vance did note some similarities between Nixon and Trump. “If you look at the story of how the deep state took down Richard Nixon, it’s not all that different from what the same groups of people, the same institutions tried to do to Donald Trump in the first Trump administration,” he said. Vance also suggested he had similarities to the man once known as “Tricky Dick.” “Young senator, vice president, writes some bestselling books, is hated by the media,” he said. “It kind of sounds like JD Vance. I’ve always liked Richard Nixon.” JD Vance: "I think Nixon's historical legacy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, and deservedly so. I joked that if Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12 hours news story. The idea that it took down a presidency is crazy." pic.twitter.com/osy0V3QLyN Many people on social media took a dim view of Vance’s love for Nixon since it basically reminded people of the Trump administration’s many scandals during both terms in office. Thanks to Watergate, we know that Nixon’s staff broke into his political opponent’s HQ & Ellsberg’s psychiatrist’s office, and that Nixon himself approved obstructing justice to cover these crimes up, tried to use the IRS to punish enemies, and was cool with breaking finance law https://t.co/yspA44cv2i I genuinely could not tell you how many books I've read on Nixon and Watergate at this point. But, suffice to say....a lot. A WHOLE lot. More than your average bear for sure. And this take is categorically stupid to a point that defies all known understanding. https://t.co/1fQL1nk9YR Vance: We are doing way more law breaking than Nixon ever did. https://t.co/oCXMm33fOh He's vice-signaling, he's telling his supporters that he will cheat and lie and steal on their behalf and will permit them to do the same.Politicians used to signal virtue, now they just signal vice. They signal how much they'll hurt the other side. https://t.co/IhZfGqiOXA So. Fucking. Revealing. https://t.co/Sq7r1pKWl4 The joke is that they’re doing so many crimes now that nobody would care about Nixon 😂 https://t.co/PgqTvNtRWN "The deep state took down the institutions."It's insane sharing a country with these people when they just want to destroy the USA. https://t.co/eTXg2Ph6Mj “We’re doing 19 watergates a day” is not a good thing https://t.co/BBVqCiSI4g This is just not the thing you say in public holding a microphone. https://t.co/q27evvC7bf CORRECTION: This article was updated to correct details about Richard Nixon’s resignation.
