Silver (SI=F) July futures opened at $69.95 per ounce on Tuesday, 0.3% lower than Monday's closing price, but higher than yesterday's open. The price of silver firmed slightly in early trading to $70.55 per ounce as of 6:54 a.m. ET. Like gold, silver prices opened at their highest value in about a week following an agreement between the U.S. and Iran to end their months-long war. Yet, the Federal Reserve begins its two-day policy-setting meeting today without a formal agreement between the two countries signed by the president. Add in the fact that details of the peace deal haven’t been released, and that reopening the Strait of Hormuz will be complicated and potentially drawn out, so markets have grown a bit wary this morning and will likely adopt a wait-and-see approach as the week progresses. If the Fed does raise interest rates this year to battle inflation, you can expect it to push silver prices lower since precious metals do not pay interest.
