Trump Reportedly Wants To Erase His Impeachments From History

President Donald Trump and his allies are reportedly weighing a plan to urge lawmakers to support a resolution that would expunge the president’s two impeachments from his first term, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. The resolution would be largely symbolic as Trump was not convicted in the Senate during either impeachment. Experts told The Journal that the resolution would mean little, legally speaking, because the Constitution provides no mechanism to undo an impeachment. “It should be done because I did nothing wrong,” Trump said when asked about the resolution in a phone call with The Journal. “It was a rigged deal — it was a whole rigged situation.” The resolution could force Republican lawmakers, who are already facing daunting prospects in the upcoming midterms, to rehash Trump’s past behavior in office related to his 2019 and 2021 impeachments, which involved charges of abuse of power, obstruction of Congress and inciting an insurrection. Several Republican lawmakers told The Journal that the resolution would not be considered until after the November elections, while adding that it may be difficult to secure the votes necessary to pass. Trump’s first impeachment for obstruction of Congress and abuse of power originated from his attempt to withhold military funding to Ukraine if the country did not investigate then-former Vice President Joe Biden, a Democratic candidate for president at the time The second impeachment, which took place after Trump had already left office in 2021, stemmed from his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and the role he played in inciting the deadly January 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
