President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, was pressed in an somewhat unlikely setting on Tuesday about a proposed idea from Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to halt customs and immigration processing at international airports in so-called “sanctuary cities.” During a Tuesday appearance on Fox News’ “American Reports,” host John Roberts pointed to comments from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy that disagreed with Mullin’s proposal. “We have people from around the world and around the country that need to be able to fly into all different kinds of places,” Duffy said. “We shouldn’t shut down air travel in a state that doesn’t agree with our politics.” Roberts then pressed Homan, who appeared on Tuesday, on what the administration’s goals would be with this plan, suggesting it would be extremely unpopular with a majority of Americans. “I mean this idea of pulling customs agents from these major airports ... ” Roberts began. “I’m reminded of that line from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’: What’s your goal here? To get everybody to hate you?” Homan replied that the plan has gained support among Republican lawmakers, adding that he would support deploying more ICE officers at airports. “Well ... Secretary Mullin came up with the idea, and I know it’s getting a lot of support on the hill,” he said. Mullin first floated his idea during a Fox News appearance last month. He said that if “radical left Democrats” won’t enforce federal law concerning immigration, then “we shouldn’t be processing international flights into their cities either.” GOP lawmakers signaled their support for Mullin’s plan this week. “I think there should be consequences to cities and states that undercut federal law,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told Fox News Digital. “I think they should pay a price for what they do. I agree with what he’s doing.” Travel industry and business leaders told The New York Times in May that Mullin’s plan would cause significant havoc at airports nationwide while hampering the travel economy at the nation’s largest ports of entry. A coalition of travel and business trade groups, including the U.S. Travel Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, issued a statement to The Times that said: “Any reduction in Customs and Border Protection operations at major U.S. gateway airports threatens to cause unnecessary chaos throughout the nation’s air transportation system.” By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
