Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville sounded genuinely stunned on Tuesday as he tried to process Donald Trump’s recent claims that he simply doesn’t care about major issues facing the GOP and the country.

Trump has at various points in the last few weeks said he doesn’t care about the negotiations to end his Iran war, about the upcoming 2026 midterms in which Republicans may take a big hit because of his administration, or about Americans’ financial situations.

“If I were a Republican House member, Senate member, I’d have to be pretty, like, he doesn’t care? What does that mean?” Carville told MS NOW’s Ari Melber.

“It’s a new message,” he continued. “I’ve never in all my years in politics, I’ve never heard the leader of a political party say, ‘I don’t care if we win the election or not, matters nothing to me.’”

Melber laughed. Carville then admitted: “He is so self-absorbed that that’s true.”

“It’s very unique that a president would say, ‘I don’t care,’” he added, before pivoting into talking about Trump’s physical health and mental acuity, which have come under increasing scrutiny after he underwent yet another medical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in May.

“The other thing is something is wrong here,” claimed Carville.

“This guy goes to Walter Reed more than I go to the bathroom,” he said. “I mean, there’s something here that’s just not adding up. And I’m not sure that we know what it is, but I suspect at some point we will know.”
