We didn’t know Stuart Smalley was in the Trump administration. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was busted writing what could be cringey affirmations to himself during Wednesday’s White House Cabinet meeting after Reuters photographer Evan Vucci snapped a photo that includes his notes. At the top of what seems to be an official White House notepad, Bessent scrawled the word “Resilience,” and underlined it. Right below the underscored word, Bessent also jotted down “Operation Economic Fury,” a reference to the economic pressure and sanctions campaign that the Trump administration is trying to wage against Iran. To the left of “Operation Economic Fury” is a little arrow pointing up to the word “Resilience.” Below this are the bracketed words, “Just in time. Just in case” with a little checkmark to its right. Bessent concluded his notes with a few words written at the very bottom, which include “resilience” again, followed by “prosperity” and a third word that’s tough to make out but could be “sow.” When the photo was shared on X Wednesday, critics of the Trump administration weren’t impressed. Many poked fun at the term “Operation Economic Fury,” which is a play on “Operation Epic Fury,” the name for the U.S. and Israel’s joint campaign against Iran that began in February. Some felt Bessent was writing down buzzwords that MAGA officials will soon be overusing in an attempt to soften domestic economic stress. Others just found the notes embarrassingly stupid. Economic Fury: The manner in which the Trump adminstration has tanked the economy. Hopefully, 'Economic Fury' is what voters will be feeling when they go to the polls. ‘Economic Fury’ is what I feel when I need to fill up my tank with gasoline It's concerning just how stupid the people tasked with running this country truly are. I think the bottom line says:Barbie accessories on sale at Walmart. So those are the talking points we’ll be hearing over & over from all the sycophants Bessent presumably jotted down these notes during the Cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday in which President Donald Trump rejected a plan to have Oman and Iran jointly control the Strait of Hormuz. The president also threatened Oman — a friend of the U.S. for two centuries — if it didn’t comply with his demands. “Oman will behave like everybody else or we’ll have to blow them up,” Trump said. On Thursday, Bessent doubled down on the president’s wild threat toward Oman in a statement published on X, writing that the U.S. will not “tolerate any effort to impose a tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz.” “Oman, in particular, should know that the U.S. Treasury will aggressively target any actors involved — directly or indirectly — in facilitating tolls for the Strait and any willing partners will be penalized,” Bessent wrote, adding that all nations “should reject” Iran’s efforts to “disrupt the free flow of commerce.” The United States Government will not tolerate any effort to impose a tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz. Oman, in particular, should know that the U.S. Treasury will aggressively target any actors involved - directly or indirectly - in facilitating tolls for the Strait and… By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
