As health officials fight to contain the deadly hantavirus tied to the MV Hondius cruise ship, they are relying on limited understanding of how it is spread, according to infectious disease experts. But this isn’t the first outbreak of the Andes strain of the virus. The New England Journal of Medicine studied a 2018 outbreak in a small Andean town in southwest Argentina and infectious disease expert Dr. Abraar Karan says it shows similarities to how COVID-19 spread in large gatherings.
