Listen, I always thought packing cubes were a waste of time, until I discovered the magic of *compression* packing cubes — and now I don't know how I ever traveled without them. As long as I didn't wildly overstuff these, the compression zipper was easy to close (though it does take a bit of elbow grease), and helped squeeze my clothes together so there was zero wasted space.
