“If you’re a romance fan, you’ll want to put The Other Bennet Sister at the top of your list.“ As a Senior Talent Booker and Producer at BuzzFeed, you can typically catch me flailing about the buzziest TV shows and movies. Streaming on BritBox in the US; new episodes every Wednesday This is probably one of my favorite series of the year so far. As a die-hard fan of shows like Downton Abbey and movies like Little Women and Sense and Sensibility, I’m telling you this show was tailor-made for us. The Other Bennet Sister is based on the book by Janice Hadlow and is a continuation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The show follows Mary Bennet, the Bennet family's overlooked sister. The first two episodes detail the events of Pride and Prejudice from Mary's POV, showing how she watched as all her sisters married, leaving her alone at home with her parents. Ella Bruccoleri portrays Mary with such inquisitive earnestness that you will no doubt fall in love with both her and Mary throughout the season. While the retelling of Pride and Prejudice is great, the show really finds its stride once Mary ventures out on her own. Namely, when she meets Tom Hayward, played by the entrancing Dónal Finn. Dónal and Ella have such electric chemistry on screen that will have you giggling and kicking your feet as their paths continue to cross for the remainder of the season, and the yearning intensifies. If you’re a romance fan, you’ll want to put The Other Bennet Sister at the top of your list. And since this series already aired in the UK, the TikTok edits are already happening, and they are immaculate. Sally Field is one of my favorite actors of all time, so put her in an adaptation of one of my favorite books, and I will definitely be telling you to watch it. Based on Shelby Van Pelt’s bestselling novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures tells the story of Tova Sullivan (Field), who takes a job as a night-shift janitor at her local aquarium to keep busy. It’s her way of coping with her grief. While working at the aquarium, Tova becomes acquainted with Marcellus (voiced by Alfred Molina), a giant Pacific octopus. Told from both Tova and Marcellus's perspectives, Remarkably Bright Creatures follows this unlikely friendship, as well as Tova’s new friendship with Cameron (Lewis Pullman), who has just arrived in town looking for his absent father. It should be no surprise that Sally is, well, remarkable as Tova, a character that was actually written with her in mind. This marks her first acting role in three years, and I sincerely hope we don’t have to wait as long for the next one. Sally and Lewis are so great on screen together that they’ll have you smiling from ear to ear one moment, and then crying over Tova and Cameron’s beautiful friendship the next. If you watch this movie and fall in love with it, like I did, I highly recommend reading the book, too. Streaming on Apple TV; new episodes every Wednesday Based on Rufi Thorpe's bestselling book, Margo's Got Money Troubles follows Margo (Elle Fanning), the child of a Hooters waitress (Michelle Pfeiffer) and an ex-pro wrestler (Nick Offerman). Margo always knew she'd have to make it on her own. But, she finds her life isn't exactly going according to plan, namely, after a brief affair, she gets pregnant and now finds herself with a baby. At 20, Margo is alone, with an infant, unemployed, and on the verge of eviction. When her estranged father agrees to move in to help with childcare, Margo knows this situation can't last forever. So, she comes up with a plan to make money quickly, but will it last forever? While I liked this book, I am really enjoying the show, particularly because of the performances from Elle, Michelle, and Nick. The three of them are so good as these characters, and they are so great together on screen. I think this show is really flying under the radar right now. Honestly, like most Apple TV shows tend to do, but I think it’s the must-watch show of the last few months. There are still a few episodes left before the finale, so you can either jump in now or binge it later. If you’re interested in reading the book now, you can pick up your copy here. Personally, I listened to it as an audiobook because Elle narrates, and I highly recommend it. Based on William Golding’s 1954 novel, Lord of the Flies marks the first TV adaptation of the book. Created by Jack Thorne, who co-created Adolescence, this adaptation drops you into the harrowing world with brilliant cinematography, standout performances from the young actors, and a present-day lens on masculinity. Lord of the Flies follows a group of young boys who become stranded on a tropical island in the early 1950s after a plane crash. While Ralph tries to lead the boys, soon tensions rise, and their makeshift society begins to fall apart. The four-part series is named after the four main characters: Piggy, Jack, Simon, and finally Ralph. Similar to what Thorne achieved with Adolescence, this adaptation examines how boys (and men) are susceptible to others' influence. If I had to pick one British limited series that’ll likely be an awards contender, I’d put money on Lord of the Flies. The show has already earned praise from Stephen King, who tweeted, “LORD OF THE FLIES (Netflix): I had my doubts, but it's remarkable. Captures all the horror and mystery of lost children descending into...well, you decide.” You can pick up a copy of the book here, and you can watch the trailer here. Also, have a question for me? Yes, I adore her as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the MCU, but I also think she has many performances that deserve equal celebration. I genuinely believe one of the most underrated performances that deserved an Emmy Award was in Sorry for Your Loss. It’s a brilliant story about grief and loss, and Lizzie is just exceptional in it every step of the way. I cannot recommend it enough. You can watch it for free right now on Tubi, too. Also, if you haven’t, I highly suggest watching her in Martha Marcy May Marlene, Ingrid Goes West, and Wind River. All three just show how dynamic she is in multiple genres. It’s also wild to see how good she was out of the gate in Martha Marcy May Marlene, which was her first big indie film role. Also, last year I watched a ton of Audrey Hepburn movies, and I have to say that Two for the Road with her and Albert Finney deserves more love, too. I fell head over heels in love with that movie, and I feel like it’s one of her more underrated performances because it’s after My Fair Lady and before Wait Until Dark. I highly recommend watching it, especially if you love rom-coms. Their chemistry is off the charts.
