The total combined wealth of the 20 wealthiest billionaires hovers at around $3.8 trillion, according to Visual Capitalist. That’s more than the gross domestic product of France.

Many of these billionaires have made their fortune through partial (or complete) ownership of select companies in fields like tech, artificial intelligence (AI) and real estate. And while you can’t go back in time and make the same investment decisions they did, you might’ve wondered where your own net worth would be sitting right now if you could.

Using data from Forbes, GOBankingRates determined the main companies the world’s wealthiest folk have invested in. We then used the data to figure out what a $100 investment in each of these companies 15 years ago would be today — and whether or not it would’ve been a smart investment.
