Lava soars into air as Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupts again

Lava flowed from the summit of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano on Thursday 9 April, with fountains reaching heights of 625ft (190M), according to the United States Geological Survey. The geological agency said the eruption began at 11:10am local time (21:10 BST). Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, has been erupting on and off since December 2024, this latest eruption marks the 44th episode since then. Jeremy Hansen received a call from the prime minister as Canada's first astronaut to travel into deep space as part of the Artemis II mission. The BBC’s Science Editor Rebecca Morelle has spoken to the Artemis II crew ahead of their likely splashdown on Saturday. The four astronauts in the Orion spacecraft set a new record for distance travelled from Earth. The Artemis II spacesuits are designed to protect the astronauts during launch and landing, as well as possible emergency scenarios. Large protests against the Trump administration took place in cities across the US, marking the third iteration of No Kings rallies.
