On April 1, General Motors announced a more than $150 million investment in its Saginaw Metal Casting Operations/SMCO to support the production of sixth-generation V-8 engine blocks and cylinder heads. This funding will be used for new equipment and tooling, preparing the facility for a production start in 2027.

The investment complements a previously announced half-billion-dollar expansion at the Flint Engine plant, securing the role of the Saginaw facility in General Motors’ future internal combustion engine supply chain. As the third-oldest General Motors facility in the United States, SMCO currently employs over 300 people across three shifts. While the plant prepares for the next generation of components used in full-size pickup trucks, it will continue to manufacture fifth-generation V-8 engine blocks.

Although the company continues to transition toward an all-electric future, this latest expenditure underscores a parallel commitment to its high-demand gasoline-powered truck portfolio. The project ensures that SMCO remains an integral part of the automotive manufacturing landscape for years to come.
