SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A popular Hillcrest bar and restaurant has been ordered to close after failing a health inspection due to a serious vermin violation. According to the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality, Gossip Grill, located at 1220 University Ave., was shut down on Wednesday following a re-inspection. The spot is widely recognized by the local LGBTQ+ community. Health inspectors cited the establishment for a “major” vermin violation, which requires immediate and corrective action or closure under California law — at least until compliance is achieved. The report indicates the presence of rodents, insects, birds, or other animals that could contaminate food or food preparation surfaces. The exact type of vermin discovered inside the restaurant was not listed on the report. President Trump announces federal anti-fraud initiative, cites California as key focus The situations appears to have escalated after a previous inspection at Gossip Grill in March, when county officials reported a “minor” vermin violation. Officials explained that regulations require food facilities to be properly constructed, maintained and operated to prevent the entry and harboring of vermin. Establishments must also keep premises clean and free of pests. The business will be required to correct the violation and pass a follow-up inspection before it can reopen. It’s unclear how long the popular LGBTQ+ friendly bar will remain closed. FOX 5/KUSI has reached out to the restaurant for comment but has been unable to reach them.
