GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Lake Michigan beach will be closed for several weeks while crews work to beat back Mother Nature. The National Park Service has announced Mount Baldy Beach in Indiana Dunes National Park will be closed while crews move about 40,000 cubic yards of sand that have buried parts of a parking lot and sanitary infrastructure. Grand Haven’s north pier set to close for 2 years for construction project The dune has slowly been growing over the nearby area and gotten to a point where “action is necessary to protect park facilities and maintain visitor access,” the National Park Service says. Crews will take the sand and place it strategically at Crescent Beach to the north. “The placed sand supports ongoing shoreline stabilization efforts, also known as beach nourishment, by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and helps restore beaches affected by erosion,” NPS says on its website. The project is designed to leave as much dune habitat undisturbed as possible. NPS hopes the work will be wrapped up by mid-June. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
