Funeral for fallen Chicago firefighter postponed after widow goes into labor

CHICAGO — Funeral services for a fallen Chicago firefighter have been postponed after his widow went into labor. Services for firefighter/EMT Michael Altman were scheduled to take place on Friday morning, but officials announced on Thursday that they had been postponed after Altman’s wife went into labor. Thursday afternoon, officials announced his wife gave birth to a baby girl named Evelyn Rose. Thursday’s visitation at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, located at 7740 South Western Avenue, was held as planned from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. “The most important thing we can do the Altman family is to be here and pay our respects to a hero in our city,” Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza said. Man charged with murder, arson in connection with death of CFD firefighter During the final hour of visitation, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and members of the Chicago police and fire departments completed walk through. “This support we have received is just amazing, truly amazing. The outpouring of love, we had a procession for an hour. It’s pouring down rain. I’m just so grateful,” Fire Commr. Annette Nance-Holt said. Mourners outside the chapel said their thoughts remain with the Altman family and all they have endured. “They are a wonderful family, every single one of them. He dedicated his life and lost his life for the city of Chicago,” family friend Garrett Flavin said. It is currently unclear when the postponed service will take place. Altman was badly injured last week while battling a fire on the city’s Far North Side. According to officials, the blaze erupted around 11:30 a.m. Monday in the 1700 block of West North Shore Avenue in Rogers Park. Crews were on the scene in just three minutes, but by that point, two floors of the building were already engulfed in flames. While battling the flames, Altman was injured when the floor beneath him collapsed. Altman, a fourth-generation firefighter who had served with the Chicago Fire Department for nearly two years, leaves behind his young son and wife, who was just days away from delivering their second child.
