The 98th Academy Awards kept film fans on the edge of their seats as two critically acclaimed thrillers vied for the most wins of the night. Hosted by Conan O’Brien at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater on Sunday, the competition ended up being a dramatic back-and-forth between “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another.” “Sinners” scooped up a record-shattering 16 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, when nominations were announced near the end of January. But director Ryan Coogler’s supernatural-infused take on the Jim Crow South had Paul Thomas Anderson’s relentless political picture hot on its trail all awards season, as it scooped up best film at both the Golden Globes and BAFTA Awards, as well as at industry honors for the Directors and Producers guilds. In the end, “One Battle” emerged as the victor, racking up six trophies, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director, while “Sinners” earned four. The vampire film’s leading man Michael B. Jordan did snag the Best Actor accolade for his double performance as the Smokestack twins, outshining “Marty Supreme’s” Timothée Chalamet, “One Battle” star Leonardo DiCaprio, Wagner Moura of Brazil’s “The Secret Agent” and Ethan Hawke of “Blue Moon.” Best Actress went to “Hamnet’s” Jessie Buckley, whose win for the Shakespearean family tragedy seemed all but guaranteed after she practically swept the category during almost every other award ceremony this season. With her Oscar, she is now the first Irish person to win the top female lead. Guillermo del Toro’s Gothic literary adaptation, “Frankenstein,” dominated the technical categories, with its creative teams collecting Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Production Design. Other memorable moments included a tie in the Best Live-Action Short set, the very first Best Casting award and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw making history as the first woman to win an Oscar for her craft.
