THREE RIVERS, MI - A spring-like storm turned violent quickly Friday afternoon, spawning at least two tornado touchdowns that damaged buildings, ripped apart part of a Menards store, and sent at least a few people to the hospital. The powerful supercell tornadic storm moved from west to east across Michigan. Its key threats were supposed to be large hail and damaging winds to 60 mph, but that changed quickly when the first Tornado Warning was issued just before 4 p.m. Over the next 90 minutes, rotating storm clouds moved east toward Ann Arbor and Detroit’s suburbs. Tornado touchdowns and heavy building damage were reported in Three Rivers, and another tornado touchdown was reported in Union City. In Three Rivers, a Menards building was heavily damaged. Debris and overturned and damaged vehicles littered the parking lot. Other nearby buildings were damaged and there were reports that the local high school had been hit. No life-threatening injuries were reported, but several people were headed to the hospital to seek treatment for minor injuries. St. Joseph County Sheriff’s officials have asked people to stay away from that northern part of the county while emergency crews deal with the aftermath. In Calhoun County’s Union City, the touchdown and storm caused more than 2,200 power outages. “Crews are on site, with more en route,“ Consumers Energy representatives said. ”We will be setting up a mobile command in Union City to help coordinate our response.” Storm systems are forecast to keep moving across the state tonight and into the overnight hours through early Saturday.
