Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of a DUI on Wednesday night in Ventura County, California, according to multiple outlets. The pop star was taken into custody around 9:30 p.m. local time, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said. She was released early in the morning on Thursday. Spears was allegedly speeding and swerving in between lanes while driving a 2026 black BMW convertible prior to her DUI arrest, according to police dispatch audio obtained by Page Six and TMZ. Authorities requested a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) who is trained to identify impaired drivers during the incident. It’s unclear if a sobriety test was performed at the scene. Sources also told TMZ that the singer had her blood drawn and tested at the hospital during her DUI arrest. It’s unclear if the “Toxic” singer was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or both. It appears that Spears was the only person in the vehicle at the time of her arrest. HuffPost has also reached out to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department for comment. TMZ reported that the pop icon’s arrest comes on the heels of Spears being granted a permanent restraining order against a 51-year-old Louisiana man who showed up uninvited to her home. The unidentified man, who allegedly shared several “disturbing social media posts,” had been harassing her online since 2013, according to Spears’ court filing. The man was arrested for trespassing at her home in 2025. Spears’ Instagram page was reportedly taken down at some point this week. The dancer’s rep, Cade Hudson, called her arrest “an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable” in a statement to HuffPost Thursday. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time,” Hudson said. The statement continued, “Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.” Spears sparked concern from fans about her well-being following the 2021 termination of her 13-year court-ordered conservatorship. Police conducted a wellness check on the musician in September 2023 after she posted a video of herself dancing with knives in her home. Spears later edited her Instagram caption to clarify that the knives were not real. “I started playing in the kitchen with knives today!!! Don’t worry they are NOT real knives !!! Halloween is soon,” she wrote. The “Toxic” singer is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4.
