Papa John’s Thursday announced that it plans to close hundreds of locations around the U.S. following weak sales.

The company said about 300 underperforming restaurants in North America will close by the end of 2027, according to CNN.

In making the announcement during an earning’s call, the company said about 200 will be slashed this year.

There’s no word yet on which ones will shutter or a schedule for their closures.

Papa John’s had about 3,500 locations by the end of 2025.

The announcement comes weeks after Pizza Hut announced it would close about 250 locations.

Papa John’s CFO Ravi Thanawala said the restaurants slated for closure were not “meeting brand expectations or lack a clear path to sustainable financial improvement.”

The company also plans to close locations where we can transfer sales to a nearby restaurant.

The company also cut about 7% of its 700-person corporate workforce.

Papa John’s reported a 5.4% decline in same-store sales in North America last quarter.

For the industry, growth in fast-food pizza sales has been roughly flat in the last two years, according to The Wall Street Journal.
