The Social Security Administration is rolling out major operational changes — a move that may impact user experience for millions of SSA recipients. The overhaul, beginning March 7, could speed up some processes for beneficiaries as it reshapes how services are delivered nationwide. According to various news outlets, starting that date, SSA will implement a new National Appointment Scheduling Calendar (NASC) and National Workload Management (NWLM) system. According to a memo obtained by National News Network, the operational overhaul is marked by these three changes: Initial claim appointments will now be managed through the National Appointment Scheduling Calendar rather than through individual field offices. The National Workload Management system will assign tasks to SSA staff nationwide based on skill set and availability rather than limiting work to local offices. SSA recipients will be able to self schedule appointments using the NASC online or by phone. Andy Sriubas, SSA’s chief of field operations, told staff the new design may help speed up service at the local level. “For decades, our 1,250 field offices have operated as independent ‘mini-SSAs.’ That model no longer serves the public or our people. It prevents true specialization, limits the impact of technology, and produces backlogs we should not sustain,” he wrote. He added that local offices “will always remain” the agency’s primary point of contact for in-person services and local office staff should be able to focus on serving people “face-to-face with empathy, accuracy, and speed.” Hundreds face layoffs as national pharmacy chain downsizes, restructures Netflix loses Warner Bros. bidding war.
