Ibu Baron required a confirmed length of 23 feet 8 inches to secure her world record. A 213-pound mass makes this python a lethal threat to ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Budi Purwanto initiated an assessment stage to address human-wildlife danger in Sulawesi. On February 4th, the longest wild snake in history was recorded according to Guinness World Records. The reticulated python was discovered in Indonesia and is thought to be the longest wild snake formally recorded. This giant snake wowed both researchers and viewers with its massive size. Read below to learn about the longest snake in the world and just how long they grow. Reticulated pythons are some of the longest wild snakes in the world. ©I Wayan Sumatika/Shutterstock.com The giant python got the nickname “Ibu Baron,” or The Baroness. She was found in a small village in Sulawesi, Indonesia, in late 2025. Her sheer size is astounding, with the GWR confirming her length at 23 feet and 8 inches! She’s even longer than a standard 20-foot shipping container or four six-foot-tall adults. This length was so shocking to locals that the GWR took notice. It is believed that the Baroness is the longest snake ever recorded. A snake of this size is amazing, but it can also be scary and dangerous. To keep both the snake and the community safe, she is now being taken care of by local conservationist Budi Purwanto. She was also assessed by wildlife guide and snake handler Diaz Nugraha and explorer and photographer Radi Frentiu. Through their efforts, this amazing python is now safe and shared with the world. Ibu Baron is not only long, but also heavy. Her weight, even when she hasn’t eaten recently, is 213 pounds—the same as a fully grown giant panda. Another note in the official record is that she might be even longer than 23 feet. Experts believe that if she were anesthetized to relax her muscles, her true length could be up to 26 feet. For her health and safety, however, they chose not to anesthetize her. Reticulated pythons are native to Southeast Asia. ©Mark_Kostich/Shutterstock.com Ibu Baron is a reticulated python, a non-venomous constrictor native to Southeast Asia. This species is generally thought to be the longest in the world, with average adults growing to around 10 to 20 feet. Constrictor snakes kill by coiling around their prey and squeezing, rather than relying on paralyzing venom. At Ibu Baron’s size, she could be powerful enough to prey on large mammals and birds, although most reticulated pythons typically feed on rats, rabbits, and monkeys. The record-breaking snake and the news surrounding her are important for raising awareness about conservation efforts for reticulated pythons. Reticulated pythons are facing habitat loss and reduced food availability. Because of this, interactions between humans and these snakes are becoming more common, often resulting in the snake’s demise. It’s important to raise awareness of their role in Indonesia’s ecosystems and to support stronger habitat protection and conservation efforts.
