Kristen Stewart had a poignant answer when asked what would be the most devastating thing Los Angeles could lose during a Tuesday night event hosted by Architectural Digest. Asked “What would break your heart if it disappeared from LA?” while in West Hollywood to celebrate AD’s March Los Angeles issue, the actor-director saluted the communities at the heart of the city. “Immigrants,” the lifelong Angeleno said without skipping a beat. Subtly denouncing the brutal immigration crackdown that began terrorizing the city last summer, Stewart said, “I can’t stand the idea that the dismantling of culture that did have a hand in making me who I am.” Making sure not to center her personal experience, she acknowledged how trivial her feelings were compared to the way people’s lives are being “completely unearthed, uprooted” and “destroyed” by Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s presence across Southern California. “This is just not who we are,” the Oscar nominee went on, saying she’s been “dying everyday” thinking about how to support her immigrant neighbors.
